Apple's 15 inch MacBook Pro
I use both Microsoft Windows XP and Apple Mac OS X regularly but I prefer using a Mac at work and at home. This article alone should not convince you to use a Mac instead of a computer running Windows. I do think you owe it to yourself to seriously consider trying a new Apple running Mac OS X.
One of the main reasons I prefer the Mac is that it costs less than a similar computer running Windows. One main reason a person might give for not using an Apple is that it costs too much. I know when I hear this that someone did not check prices in the last few years. Low-price computers from Apple with full features and software cost less than the equivalent computers from Dell or anyone else. I know that the ads from Dell seem to tell another story but if you try to actually buy a Dell computer that is good enough for the average user, it will cost much more than the ad promises.
Not only is the hardware more expensive on a PC running Windows but the Operating System also costs more. If you have a computer already and you want to buy Microsoft’s Windows XP, it will cost you $279. Apple’s Mac OS X is only $129. You might also compare the cost of Microsoft Office for Windows and for Mac. This software suite which most businesses use costs exactly the same for the Mac as it does for Windows.
Every new Mac comes with software to do most things people want to do at work or at home. Apple provides bundled software that is easy to use to work with word processing documents, e-mail, photos, music, databases, spreadsheets, movies, addresses, schedules and much more. The software works very well and is designed to take advantage of open standards to share information with other computers. Files used by these programs can be shared with your co-workers and friends running Windows because the file formats are compatible. New Macs create CDs and DVDs that will play on Windows computers as well as newer component CD and DVD players.
At work my primary computer is an Apple PowerBook G4 running Mac OS X. Compared to other full-featured laptops I have used it is lighter than most. The display is bright and crisp. Many Windows laptops have a dull screen and the text is often jagged.
Another reason I prefer using a Mac at work is that it has UNIX under the hood. This gives my Mac a powerful and standard operating system that is very secure and very stable. Simply from switching operating systems the Mac now runs thousands more programs and can use many more printers and other devices.
Another reason I prefer using a Mac at work is the networking. A Mac running Apple Mac OS X can natively network with old Macs, new Macs, Windows, Novell and UNIX.
